Getting a library card is one of the easiest (and most rewarding) things you can do—think of it as your all-access pass to books, movies, music, Wi-Fi, events, and so much more. And the best part? It’s usually completely free.
When you sign up, you’ll typically need a photo ID (like a driver’s license or school ID) and something that shows your current address, such as a utility bill or piece of mail. If you’re under 18, you might need a parent or guardian to sign with you—but that just means you get to share the library love.
Once you’re approved, you’ll receive your library card—your golden ticket. Some libraries give you a physical card on the spot, while others also provide a digital version you can keep on your phone. With it, you can check out books, stream movies, borrow eBooks and audiobooks, reserve museum passes, and access online learning tools from anywhere.
Pro tip: Don’t be shy—ask the librarian what your card can do. Every library offers something a little different, from free printing credits to workshops and community events. You might be surprised at what’s included.
